Not bad.

I tried to be completely honest. This is better than I thought, really.

Lemons to lemonade

That little box of chocolates... I decided it was from some friend at the office*, just a sweet thing to do. But it felt sour with the recent breakup of my relationship. Crabby, crabby, crabby... I finally slid it out of sight behind something.

After lunch, I thought, "I haven't gotten G anything for Valentine's Day and he would really love it." So I decided to give him the little box. I holds probably 4 chocolates, so that's perfect.

Then dharma sent me this link. My little one just adores origami. I noticed that the pages from my page-a-day desk calendar are perfect squares. So I folded one up, colored it pink with my desk highlighter, and wrote "I love you G/Mommy" under the bottom flap.

I feel so much better! He is going to love this.

*everyone got one and no one has yet taken credit.

Well, here we are again

Another Valentine's Day with no sweetie. (Yes, yes, it was I who broke it off; I'm clear on that.) But the last Valentine's Day I had with a sweetie was so long ago, I'm not even sure of the year, except it was before 1999, since that's when I got knocked up with G. It was with Linda, and oy, we were so much younger then. 10 years ago, maybe?

I came into my office and there was a tiny heart-shaped box of Russell Stover chocolates on my desk. My heart stopped, wondering who the heck it could be from. We still don't know, but we do know that everyone in the office got one.

Add me to the list of those who hate this holiday.

"Don't skimp"

I have been needing a new mattress set (yes, even the box--it's bowed in places) for some time now. I was hoping to find time to shop for one, oh, 2-3 weeks ago, and it just hasn't happened.

I mentioned this search to my mother, who cautioned me not to skimp--"Buy a good one. I'm glad I did." Then she goes on to say that she spent $400 on her mattress (she has a platform bed, so no box) and is glad she did.

I then give her a heart attack by mentioning that European Sleep Works, in Berkeley, is highly recommended, and that their cheapest Queen set is $1400. Which presumably doesn't include delivery or takeaway of the old set. So much for the not skimping.

Costco doesn't have anything that sounds affordable except for a set that curiously doesn't mention any springs (all foam? No thanks!). Ah... now that I look again, there is a set with actual coils (sheesh!) for $899 delivered. That could work!

I don't remember it being this hard.

Ow

Many, if not all, of you know that I broke up with my sweetie last Wednesday. It was a painful decision, difficult message to deliver, and I am still periodically fighting back tears. Some days are better and others are excruciating. I went to a church workshop on Saturday and found myself frantically scanning for her, before I was told by a mutual friend that she had decided not to come. I tried to ask myself why I so frantically needed to know if she was there, and realized that the next time I see her, it's going to hit me like a ton of bricks. I guess I would like fair warning. I think about her a lot and am still trying to see if there is another way. I don't think there is, but it was very hard to give up this relationship. I understand she is not sleeping well; I hope the intervening days have brought her some comfort. I know she is reaching out to her friends and I hope that is helping. I am also reaching out and have found my sister to be a great comfort to me.

There's my baby!

My dog baby, that is. I was wondering how old Maddy really is, as I tend to have a hard time keeping track of that stuff. So I went off searching for records under her official AKC name, Rhonda Flaming (the litter had puns on famous peoples' names). I thought and thought and finally came up with her kennel name, Borador. When I searched on her full name, found her in a list! She's going to be 14 this year. Not quite as old as I'd thought!

That's my girl! Show-dog washout but sweet, healthy pet for me.
